Casino bonuses UK: understand rewards and conditions

UK casino bonuses are easier to assess when you separate the route to a reward from the reward itself. “Deposit £10”, “stake £10” and “receive 50 spins” describe three different stages. None tells you how much cash, if any, you will finish with. This guide explains the major bonus types and the terms that most often change their practical meaning.

Start with the type of reward

  • Free spins are promotional stakes on specified slot games. Compare the count, value per spin, eligible title, issue schedule, expiry and handling of winnings. Use the free-spins hub for detailed examples.
  • Deposit-match funds add a percentage of a qualifying deposit, often up to a cap. A 100% match up to £50 does not mean £50 can be withdrawn immediately; the credit and resulting winnings may have conditions.
  • No-deposit rewards do not require a player-funded deposit to receive the stated reward. They can still require registration, age and identity checks, an eligible game, a code or a time limit. See no-deposit free spins.
  • Cashback or money-back rewards return an amount defined by the operator’s terms. They may be based on net losses, stakes or another calculation and can be cash, bonus credit or a different reward. See the cashback guide.
  • Reload and loyalty rewards depend on later deposits, activity or account status. Do not compare them with an open-to-all welcome offer unless eligibility is equivalent.

What the headline leaves out

Before accepting a casino promotion, note the exact qualification: new or existing customer, territory, payment restrictions, opt-in or code, qualifying deposit and any separate play requirement. Then note the credit date, game list, expiry, maximum stake while a bonus is active, any winnings cap and whether winnings become cash or restricted bonus funds. If an offer is staggered across several deposits or days, record each instalment instead of advertising the total as an immediate award.

A £10 first deposit and a £10 slot-staking requirement are not interchangeable. The latter requires gambling and may cause a loss before a reward arrives. Likewise, 100 spins at 5p and 50 spins at 10p both represent £5 of nominal funded stakes, but not £5 of guaranteed winnings. Actual slot outcomes are uncertain, and the games or expiry windows may differ.

Wagering rules in Great Britain

Since 19 January 2026, the Gambling Commission’s rule for bonus-funded incentives has prohibited a wagering requirement above 10 times the incentive amount. This limits a particular type of playthrough; it does not say every offer must be wager-free or prevent a separate qualifying action before a reward is issued. Do not confuse a historical article describing 30x or 50x bonuses with a current UK offer.

The Commission’s consumer guidance also stresses clarity about whether play uses a customer’s own money or restricted bonus funds. Our worked wagering examples and bonus-rules guide explain the difference between qualification, playthrough and withdrawal.

A practical five-minute comparison

  1. Open the operator’s current UK promotion page and linked terms, not an undated comparison snippet.
  2. Record eligibility and the money you must deposit or risk in qualifying play.
  3. Translate the reward into its correct unit: cash, restricted credit or funded spins on named games.
  4. Write down the deadline and the exact event that starts it: registration, deposit, qualification, crediting or acceptance.
  5. Check what happens to winnings and whether any restriction survives the reward’s use. Save the terms that apply to your account.

For two real examples of why this matters, our PlayOJO vs MrQ and Betfred vs PlayOJO pages cite dated operator terms and avoid making a universal winner from spin count. They are comparison guides, not a promise of an active offer or an invitation to raise your deposit.

How we handle offers on WagerFreeSpins

We do not show a “best bonus” ranking on this hub until each candidate has an attributable, current UK offer, complete terms and an approved destination for any commercial button. A database record for a casino or payment method does not, by itself, validate a bonus. Our editorial methodology explains source dates and unresolved claims. Where evidence is missing, we say so.
