Casino bonus max-bet rules in the UK: four limits explained
Short answer: a casino bonus “max bet” is the largest stake that an operator’s particular promotion permits while its play restrictions apply. It is not the same as Great Britain’s legal online-slots stake limit, the number of times bonus funds must be wagered, or a cap on winnings. There is no single bonus max-bet figure that applies to every UK casino offer. Read the exact dated terms and check which account balance is being used before treating a headline limit as your rule.
This guide is for adults considering or questioning an online casino promotion in Great Britain. It does not list active bonuses, recommend a stake, or calculate a route to profit. We checked the Gambling Commission’s online-slots stake-limit guidance, promotional-play guidance, deposit-balance guidance and rewards and bonuses code on 6 October 2026. The operator’s own promotion terms still determine its bonus-specific restrictions.
Four different limits that an advert can blur
| Term | What it controls | Where to check it |
|---|---|---|
| Bonus max bet | The stake allowed under one promotion’s play restrictions while they apply. | The full offer terms and the account’s restricted-funds display. |
| Online-slots legal stake limit | The total staked in an online slot game cycle in Great Britain: £2 for ages 18–24 or £5 for ages 25 and over. | The Gambling Commission’s guidance. It does not set a general roulette or blackjack stake limit. |
| Wagering requirement | The total eligible turnover needed before specified bonus funds become withdrawable. It is a cumulative target, not a per-bet ceiling. | The offer’s wagering base, multiplier and eligible-game contributions; see our calculation guide. |
| Maximum win or conversion cap | How much of a particular promotional win may be retained or converted under its terms, if such a cap exists. | The offer’s winnings and withdrawal clauses; see our maximum-win explanation. |
The Gambling Commission’s fair-terms glossary treats maximum stake size and wagering requirements as distinct significant promotional conditions. A 10x wagering requirement does not mean a £10 maximum bet. A £5 slots limit does not mean every bonus permits £5 promotional stakes.
What is the legal online-slots stake limit?
For online slots in Great Britain, the total that may be staked in one game cycle is capped at £2 for adults aged 18–24 and £5 for adults aged 25 or over. The Commission says the £5 limit for all adults came into effect on 9 April 2025 and the lower limit for 18–24-year-olds on 21 May 2025. These are online-slot limits, not a universal bonus max-bet term and not a statutory ceiling for every other casino game. The official guidance explains how the amount is counted across a game cycle.
If a hypothetical slot promotion sets a £1 bonus-play ceiling for an eligible player aged 30, the promotional £1 condition is tighter than the £5 slots limit. If a different hypothetical offer says £3 but the player is 23, the £2 legal online-slots limit still applies to that game. These examples compare two ceilings; they do not establish any current casino offer or suggest that a player should stake either amount. A bonus for roulette or blackjack may still have its own promotional restriction, but the online-slots law should not be described as governing those games.
When does a promotional maximum bet apply?
Start with the wording that identifies which funds and which period are restricted. A term may refer to active bonus funds, winnings from free spins, a pending wagering target or a specified game. The banner alone may not answer whether the cap starts on opt-in, on crediting the reward or when restricted funds are first used. Do not assume it lasts forever or ends as soon as the original free spins are played. Check the operator’s account display and ask its support team for the exact state of your balance if it is unclear.
Your own deposit balance is different from restricted bonus funds. The Gambling Commission says promotional play restrictions and wagering requirements must not apply to play with a consumer’s deposit balance, except that an in-game mechanism may prevent a deposit-funded wager that would breach a promotional play restriction. The operator must display deposit and bonus balances separately and let the consumer withdraw the deposit balance subject to general regulatory obligations and fair, disclosed processing terms. This is why a vague message saying “your bonus is active” is not enough to conclude that all of your own money is locked.
How to read a max-bet clause before accepting it
- Find the full, dated promotion. Save the headline and the linked terms before opting in. Check whether the limit is a fixed amount, a percentage of a defined bonus balance or a rule tied to one game.
- Identify the affected wallet and start/end points. Distinguish your deposit, restricted bonus balance and any spin winnings. The consequences may change after a bonus is cancelled or completed.
- Check the unit. “Per spin”, “per bet” and “per game cycle” need not describe the same thing. For an online slot, the statutory limit concerns the total stake during a game cycle.
- Read the consequence of a breach. Look for an explicit explanation of what happens to the bonus, winnings and deposit. Do not infer automatic confiscation from a generic “bonus abuse” line.
- Check adjacent restrictions. Eligible games, contribution percentages, expiry, maximum win and a wagering target are separate conditions. A permitted stake can still be on a game that contributes 0% to turnover.
The Commission says operators must make significant incentive conditions clear, fair and readily accessible under code 5.1.1. Its transparency guidance also says merely burying restricted-funds rules in terms is not sufficient: customers must be told when they are playing with restricted funds and reminded of the restrictions. If the clause and the account interface disagree, preserve both rather than guessing which version governs.
Does the UK 10x rule set the maximum stake?
No. The Gambling Commission’s current rewards and bonuses code prohibits a requirement to play through bonus funds above 10 times. That is a total wagering cap, not permission to stake ten times the bonus in one bet. A promotion may state 0x, 5x or another permitted requirement and separately restrict bet size. Do not mistake nominal spin value, qualifying deposit or prize cap for the wagering base. Our GB bonus-rules guide covers the broader 2026 changes.
Hypothetical arithmetic can clarify the distinction: £8 of specified bonus funds at 5x would mean £40 of eligible turnover, while a separate £1 promotional maximum would describe a per-stake restriction. It does not mean that forty £1 bets are financially safe, required in one session or likely to leave a balance. Games can contribute differently, stakes can lose, and the offer may expire. You can decline or cancel a promotion rather than play to complete a target.
What if the operator says you exceeded the bonus max bet?
Stop using the promotion while the issue is unresolved. Keep the dated terms, opt-in confirmation, balance display, game history and the message explaining the decision. Ask the operator to identify the exact clause, affected balance, game cycle or wager, amount, time and consequence. A game accepting a stake does not by itself prove that a separate promotional rule was satisfied, but neither does a generic accusation establish a fair or clearly disclosed breach.
The Gambling Commission’s promotional-play guidance says prohibited play must be specified in advance; operators must not reserve sole discretion to invent breaches later. If winnings are removed or a withdrawal refused for a promotional-play breach, the operator must give a full explanation of the relevant restriction and specific terms breached, subject to its other regulatory obligations. The Commission has also warned about potentially unfair terms that void real-money winnings after inadvertent staking-rule mistakes. That warning does not decide an individual dispute or guarantee a refund.
If the answer is unsatisfactory, use the operator’s complaints process and keep its final response. The Commission explains how to complain and when an independent ADR provider can consider an unresolved dispute. Do not gamble further in an attempt to repair the account state. Common questions
Is the max-bet rule always £5 at a UK casino?
No. £5 is the legal online-slots limit for adults aged 25 or over in Great Britain. A promotion can specify a lower bonus-play limit; adults aged 18–24 have a £2 legal online-slots limit. Read the current offer for the bonus rule and the official guidance for the game-specific legal limit.
Is a maximum bet the same as maximum winnings?
No. One limits a stake while a stated promotion applies; the other may limit what specified promotional winnings can be retained or converted. An offer may use one, both or neither. Check the exact terms.
Do free spins themselves have a max-bet rule?
Free spins usually have a stated stake or denomination per credited spin and an eligible game. A separate max-bet clause may affect subsequent play with restricted winnings. Do not assume the free-spin denomination tells you the rule for later bets or that the spins will win.
Can I withdraw my own deposited money if a bonus is active?
The Commission says operators must allow withdrawal of the deposit balance even with a pending or active bonus, subject to general regulatory obligations and fair, disclosed processing terms. Your own money and restricted bonus funds must be displayed separately. Consult the official explanation and the operator’s account details.
