Bonus balance vs cash balance at UK casinos
A casino account can show more than one balance. The total on the screen is not necessarily the amount you can withdraw today. In Great Britain, the useful distinction is between the deposit balance (your own unspent money and winnings from it) and a bonus balance (promotional funds and winnings that may still have conditions). A casino may label the first pot “cash”, “real money” or “available funds”, but check its account breakdown rather than relying on a label alone.
The short answer
- Deposit or cash balance
- Money you paid in, plus winnings from play with that money. The Gambling Commission’s glossary calls this the deposit balance. It must be displayed separately from restricted bonus funds.
- Bonus or restricted balance
- A promotional amount or winnings tied to unfinished bonus conditions. It may be playable without being withdrawable yet. What happens after a condition is met depends on the specific promotion.
- Withdrawable amount
- The amount the account currently permits you to request, subject to ordinary identity, payment and other regulatory checks. It is not automatically the same as the combined balance shown above the game.
These are categories of funds, not three separate promises of payment. The Gambling Commission says operators must display deposit and bonus balances separately and cannot make players wager their own deposit or winnings from it before withdrawing those funds. See its withdrawal guidance for the precise rule and exceptions for general regulatory obligations.
A £20 deposit and a £10 bonus: what does £30 mean?
Imagine a hypothetical offer credits a £10 bonus after you deposit £20. Before you play, the account might show £30 in total, split into £20 deposit balance and £10 bonus balance. The combined £30 does not mean all £30 is available for immediate withdrawal. The £20 is your unspent deposit; the £10 may remain restricted by the promotion. This is an illustration, not a live casino offer or a promise that every account displays its wallet in the same way.
If you decide to withdraw your deposit, read what happens to the unused bonus. A promotion may say that withdrawing your own funds ends the promotional benefit. That is different from making your original £20 subject to bonus wagering. Keep a screenshot of the two balances and the terms if the cashier displays a different result.
Which balance pays for the next spin?
There is no safe universal answer such as “cash always goes first” or “bonus always goes first”. The order depends on the operator’s wallet rules, the selected game, any active promotion and whether a stake can draw on both pots. Ask these questions in the account’s bonus tab or current terms:
- Will the next stake come from my deposit balance, bonus balance or both?
- If both are used, how will any winnings be divided between unrestricted and restricted funds?
- Does this game contribute to any bonus play-through, and is the contribution less than 100%?
- What happens to the bonus if I stop playing or request a withdrawal?
The regulator’s glossary calls a stake drawn from both pots a mixed wager. That is why merely seeing a win appear in an account total is not enough to establish that the entire win is withdrawable. If the cashier gives only one combined number, open the account or bonus page: the Gambling Commission says the deposit and bonus pots must be separately and prominently displayed there, even if they are not both visible inside the game.
When does bonus money become withdrawable?
Read the exact offer, not a generic headline. The promotion should say whether bonus funds themselves can convert to cash, whether only winnings from those funds can be withdrawn, and what must happen first. Possible conditions include qualifying play, a bonus-funds wagering requirement, eligible games, a time limit and a maximum promotional win. Some offers may have no additional wagering on winnings while still having other significant conditions.
For applicable GB incentives, the Gambling Commission’s rewards and bonuses code forbids a requirement to play through bonus funds more than 10 times. For example, 10x on a £10 bonus would be £100 of qualifying stakes, not a guaranteed £100 return. That regulatory cap does not require every bonus to have 10x wagering, remove a promotional win cap or change the status of your own deposit. Our wagering guide explains how to read the calculation base; the maximum-win guide separates a promotional cap from a cashier rule.
Can I withdraw my deposit while a bonus is active?
The central GB rule is that a pending or active bonus must not lock your deposit balance or winnings generated from that balance behind bonus wagering. The operator may still need to carry out identity, anti-fraud or other general regulatory checks. The Gambling Commission also permits a disclosed, cost-reflective processing charge for a withdrawal, but it says that charge must not exceed the direct processing cost. See the regulator’s full withdrawal guidance rather than assuming that every request will settle instantly or without checks.
Do not confuse that right with keeping a promotion after withdrawing. A bonus may be cancelled under its stated conditions; those conditions must not convert your deposit into restricted bonus money. The consumer guide to free offers says customers should be able to keep what remains of their deposit and winnings from play with it, and should be told when play uses their own money rather than restricted funds.
A one-minute balance check before you accept an offer
- Find the separate deposit and bonus figures on the account page and note which one is withdrawable.
- Read the current promotion’s qualifying action, fund-use order, eligible games, expiry and any maximum win.
- Check whether any play-through applies to bonus funds or bonus winnings, and what happens when it finishes.
- Check what happens to unused promotional funds if you request your own money back.
- Keep the terms and a dated screenshot if the displayed pots or withdrawal result do not match the explanation.
Our deposit versus no-deposit guide helps separate paying in from later bonus wagering. If free spins were never credited, use the missing-spins checklist rather than treating a £0 bonus balance as proof that you lost a reward.
What if the cashier says your own money is locked?
First check whether the amount in question came from your deposit, from winnings made with your deposit, or from promotional play. Ask the casino to identify the exact balance, the term it is applying and any ordinary regulatory check that is pending. Keep the account breakdown, the accepted offer terms, transaction history and the operator’s written reply. If the response does not resolve the issue, the Gambling Commission explains how to complain to the business and when a dispute can go to alternative dispute resolution. This guide is general information, not a finding about an individual account.
