Free spins win caps in the UK: what a maximum win really limits
Understand the difference between a slot’s top prize, a free-spins winnings cap and a cashier limit before accepting an offer.
Checked 6 October 2026. A free-spins promotion can have a large spin count and still limit the amount of promotional winnings you may keep. The phrase maximum win is especially confusing because it can describe a slot game’s theoretical top prize or a separate limit in a casino offer. Those are not the same thing. Here is a practical way to read the offer before you claim it.
Three numbers that can look like a win cap
- Game maximum win
- A game description may state a top possible payout as a multiple of the stake. It describes the game, not necessarily what a promotional account may withdraw. It is not a prediction of what your spins will win.
- Promotional winnings cap
- Offer terms may limit the winnings credited or made withdrawable from a specified batch of free spins. Check whether the limit applies per spin, per batch, across a whole promotion or to a later bonus stage. Do not infer its scope from a banner alone.
- Cashier withdrawal minimum or limit
- A payment screen may set a minimum withdrawal transaction or a daily processing amount. That is an account-payment rule, not automatically a cap on winnings from the promotion. Read the relevant terms separately.
These labels may be used differently by different operators. If an advert says “no wagering” but says nothing about maximum winnings, look for the full terms; 0x playthrough does not by itself answer whether a separate cap applies. Our wagering guide explains what a playthrough requirement actually measures.
A worked example: 50 spins, 20p each and a £50 cap
Imagine an offer of 50 promotional spins at 20p per spin. The nominal stakes total £10, but you have not been handed £10 in withdrawable cash. Suppose, purely for illustration, the spins produce £120 in game winnings and the applicable terms clearly limit total winnings from those spins to £50. The capped promotional figure would be the lesser of £120 and £50: £50. That arithmetic does not establish that any particular casino currently offers those terms or that a payout is guaranteed.
Before applying the example to a real account, check when the cap is applied, whether it covers only spin winnings or also later winnings from a restricted bonus balance, and how the operator treats any excess. If the terms are unclear, ask support for the exact clause and calculation before placing further bets. Do not assume a promotional cap also limits money won from play with your own deposit.
A cap is not the same as wagering
A cap sets an upper amount under the specified offer terms; wagering describes the qualifying play needed before bonus funds become withdrawable. You need to inspect both fields, along with whether the credited reward is cash or restricted bonus money. The Gambling Commission’s current rewards-and-bonuses code requires incentive terms to be clear, transparent, fair and accessible and prohibits playthrough requirements over 10 times bonus funds. That 10x rule is not a universal £10, £50 or £100 maximum-win cap.
The regulator’s consumer guidance also says operators should distinguish a customer’s own money from bonus funds subject to additional restrictions. The Competition and Markets Authority’s advice says promotional conditions should be clear in good time and that customers should be able to walk away with what remains of their deposit and winnings earned from playing with it. A dispute about a particular cap needs the actual accepted offer terms and transaction history; this guide cannot decide an individual case.
What to record before accepting free spins
- Find the exact campaign. Save the offer URL, name, date and complete terms. A similarly named welcome or loyalty offer may use a different cap.
- Separate the stages. If the first spins need no deposit but later spins require payment or qualifying play, establish which winnings each condition covers. Our deposit versus no-deposit comparison explains this distinction.
- Write down the cap’s scope. Does it apply per spin, per batch, per person, per promotional period or to a combined reward? Is it a maximum amount credited, a maximum amount made withdrawable or a cashier transaction rule?
- Check the other limits. Note the stake per spin, eligible game, opt-in, claim and play deadlines, any playthrough on the resulting balance, and the way winnings are displayed in the account.
- Keep the evidence. Save the accepted terms and later account or promotion-history entries. Do not make another deposit or place more bets merely to investigate a disputed cap.
What if the credited amount is lower than expected?
First compare the stated maximum with the account’s separate cash and bonus balances, and check whether the spins were actually awarded and played on the eligible game. If the issue is missing spins rather than a winnings calculation, use our missing free spins troubleshooting guide. For a cap dispute, send the operator the campaign terms you accepted, claim and play times, game and round references where available, and the amount you expected. Ask it to identify the exact term and arithmetic used.
If support cannot resolve the problem, follow the operator’s formal complaints process. The Gambling Commission’s complaint guide explains when an unresolved complaint may go to an independent Alternative Dispute Resolution provider. Do not publish account IDs or personal documents in a public review.
Quick answers
Does “no wagering” mean unlimited free-spin winnings?
No. It addresses playthrough, not every other offer condition. Read the cap, balance type, expiry and withdrawal wording separately.
Is the game’s advertised maximum win my promotional cashout limit?
Not necessarily. A game prize ceiling and a campaign’s maximum eligible winnings have different scopes. Check both the game information and the exact offer terms.
Can I use another deposit to get around a cap?
Do not deposit or gamble more in an attempt to recover a restricted promotional amount. A new payment does not rewrite the accepted campaign terms. If the calculation is disputed, pursue clarification or a complaint instead.
