Megaways is a slot mechanic, not the name of one game or a promise of more frequent wins. Its best-known feature is a changing number of symbols on the reels, which changes the number of possible left-to-right matching combinations from spin to spin. If you are comparing a Megaways title with an ordinary line slot, the useful questions are what can match, how a paid game cycle ends, and whether the advertised maximum applies to the base game or a feature.
What the ways counter actually counts
In a conventional fixed-line slot, a winning combination follows one of the prescribed line paths. A ways-based game can evaluate eligible symbol positions on successive reels without following those paths. The number shown as “ways” is the number of potential position combinations, not the number of wins delivered on that spin. Matching-symbol, direction, wild and scatter rules still determine whether any of those combinations pays.
Big Time Gaming’s Monopoly Deluxe description gives a concrete six-reel example: between two and seven symbols can appear on each reel, producing a stated maximum of 117,649 ways. If a hypothetical six-reel result displayed 2, 3, 4, 3, 2 and 5 eligible symbol positions, multiplication would give 720 possible position combinations. That is arithmetic about the layout, not 720 payouts or a prediction of the next result.

The headline maximum belongs to a particular game state
Some titles modify the reel height in bonus rounds. Big Time Gaming’s Wheel of Fortune Megaways page distinguishes up to 117,649 ways in its base game from up to one million in its Free Spins feature. Those two numbers cannot be swapped between states, and the one-million claim should not be attached to every Megaways game. Record the full title, developer and exact feature before using a maximum in a comparison.
Megaways is licensed to other studios. A title using the mechanic is not automatically developed by Big Time Gaming, and two games with the same mechanic may differ in symbol rules, feature entry, volatility and RTP. Follow one paid spin through its full sequence
In a title with cascading or reacting symbols, a winning group may disappear and be replaced, allowing the same paid round to be evaluated again. That extra visual evaluation is not automatically a newly paid spin or an extra promotional free spin. Check whether the on-screen win total covers all cascades and when a multiplier resets. A fast animation can obscure the number of completed cycles; use the game history to confirm the accepted stake and result.
For a UK account, do not rely on old screenshots advertising an automatic sequence of spins. The Gambling Commission’s remote technical standard requires the customer to commit to each online gaming cycle individually. This says nothing about whether a particular title or promotion is currently available at a casino.
Compare offers without borrowing another game’s rules
When a free-spin offer names a Megaways game, match the complete title and version, stake value per spin, expiry, and treatment of any winnings to the operator’s terms. “Megaways slots” as a category does not mean every title qualifies.
