UK casino deposit limits: gross vs net after September 2026
The new UK gross deposit-limit rules explained with a worked example, plus what to check before depositing or claiming an offer.
Checked 6 October 2026. A deposit limit controls how much money you can put into a gambling account during a chosen period. It is not the same as a casino’s minimum deposit, a bonus qualification amount or a guarantee that gambling is affordable. The UK Gambling Commission’s updated rules require a particular kind of limit, called a gross deposit limit, to be offered from 30 September 2026. Here is what that means when you are comparing UK casino terms.
What changed on 30 September 2026?
UK gambling systems must offer customers a gross deposit limit at account level and describe that control as a “deposit limit”. If a site offers other kinds of financial limits as well, its gross deposit limit must be at least as prominent. The regulator originally planned this phase for June 2026, then moved the deadline to 30 September 2026. These requirements are now reflected in the current UK Gambling Commission financial-limits standard, RTS 12 and its implementation notice.
The operator must offer time periods that include 24 hours, seven days and one month. If you set more than one limit, the most restrictive applicable limit controls what you can deposit. The period’s reset point should be clear in the operator’s limit-setting screen. A gross deposit limit must use a fixed time frame; an optional net limit may have a different arrangement, so read the on-screen definition rather than guessing from the label.
Gross versus net: a simple example
| Type of limit | What counts | Amount used in this example |
|---|---|---|
| Gross deposit limit | All money deposited during the period. A withdrawal does not subtract from that total. | £50 |
| Optional net deposit limit | Deposits minus withdrawals during the period. | £30 |
If you had set a £60 gross limit for that period, the example leaves £10 of deposit capacity, not £30. The £20 withdrawal does not reset a gross limit. The net calculation is shown only to explain the difference; an operator does not have to offer a net limit. The UKGC defines both calculations in its full RTS 12 wording.
Where should you find and set a limit?
The operator must make limit-setting accessible from its homepage and deposit screens, and prompt a new customer to set a limit during registration or before the first deposit or payment. Setting a limit must be presented as the default choice; declining it requires an active step. You should be able to enter an amount, rather than choose only from preset amounts. Check whether the control covers the entire account or whether an additional product-specific control has narrower scope.
Lowering a customer-set limit should take effect immediately unless a technical failure prevents it. Increasing one requires your request, a cooling-off period of at least 24 hours and a further positive confirmation after that period. If a limit has stopped a deposit, a promotion is not a reason to work around it. These points are set out in RTS 12A–12E.
A deposit limit is not an offer condition
Three amounts on a casino site can look similar but answer different questions:
- Deposit limit: the maximum you choose to pay into your account over a defined period.
- Minimum deposit: the smallest payment that the casino accepts for a transaction.
- Qualifying deposit: the amount and any other conditions a specific promotion requires. That can also depend on eligibility, opt-in, payment method, timing or game restrictions.
Our deposit guides explain why a stated deposit amount does not, by itself, prove that a bonus will be awarded. Read the operator’s current promotion terms before making a decision. Do not raise or bypass a personal limit just to reach a promotional threshold.
A practical check before depositing
- Open the operator’s account-level deposit-limit screen and check the amount, time period and reset point.
- If another financial limit is displayed, check whether it is gross, net, stake-based or loss-based. The labels are not interchangeable.
- Check your remaining budget independently of any welcome offer. Gambling can lead to losses, including when free spins are involved.
- If an offer matters to your choice, read its current eligibility and significant conditions separately from the deposit-limit controls.
- If you need a break rather than a different limit, use the operator’s time-out or self-exclusion tools. Our safer-gambling guide explains support options.

This is a plain-English explanation of the UKGC’s current RTS 12 financial-limits standard (updated 30 September 2026), its 26 May 2026 implementation notice and the full amended wording. It does not test an individual casino’s implementation or give personal financial advice. If an operator’s screen or terms differ from this explanation, check the current official text and ask the operator to clarify before depositing.
