Casino wagering requirements and wager-free spins: UK guide
Wagering requirements tell you how much qualifying gambling turnover must be completed before particular promotional funds can be withdrawn. A 0x or wager-free condition means no additional promotional turnover on the specified bonus or free-spin winnings. Neither phrase tells you whether a deposit or qualifying stake is needed, whether the spins will win, or when a withdrawal will arrive. This UK guide separates those questions and shows how to read the actual terms.
What is a casino wagering requirement?
It is a required total of eligible stakes before restricted promotional funds become withdrawable. “Rollover” or “playthrough” usually refers to the same turnover calculation. It is not a fee paid to the casino, a guaranteed amount you will get back, or necessarily the amount you must deposit. The Gambling Commission’s glossary defines wagering requirements by the wagers needed for funds to become withdrawable.
Read an offer as separate stages: qualify (perhaps opt in, deposit or stake); receive a bonus or spins; use them under the specified game, time and stake rules; then withdraw any eligible remaining balance. “Deposit £10” means put £10 into an account. “Stake £10” means risk £10 on gambling. Neither promises a return. A qualifying stake is not automatically the later bonus rollover.
How do you calculate wagering requirements?
Promotional base × multiplier = required qualifying turnover. First find the base in the terms. It might be stated as bonus funds or the winnings from free spins; do not substitute the deposit, number of spins or their nominal stake unless the specific terms say so. Next identify the multiplier and which wagers count. If a game contributes less than 100%, the actual amount staked to reach the target can be higher.
The examples below are hypothetical arithmetic, not live offers or expected returns:
| Terms | Calculation | Qualifying turnover |
|---|---|---|
| 0x on £8 | £8 × 0 | £0 |
| 5x on £8 | £8 × 5 | £40 |
| 10x on £8 | £8 × 10 | £80 |
For another illustration, a £10 bonus at 5x requires £50 of qualifying stakes. That is not a £50 charge. Stakes can lose, and the balance may run out before the target is reached. There is no reason to deposit again simply to complete it.
Do winnings from a spin count towards wagering?
Where an offer measures wagering by eligible stakes, a hypothetical £2 spin that pays £5 adds £2 to the turnover counter at 100% game contribution—not £5 returned or £3 net winnings. At 50% contribution, the same stake adds £1. The payout changes your balance, not the amount of that bet that qualifies. A losing £2 spin would count the same £2 at 100%; neither outcome guarantees that money remains by the time the requirement is met. Check the operator’s own contribution table and account progress display.
What if a game contributes only part of each stake?
Suppose the terms say a particular game contributes 50% and £40 of qualifying turnover remains. Each hypothetical £1 stake would reduce the target by 50p; £80 of such stakes would be needed to record £40 of qualifying turnover. If a game contributes 0%, playing it does not reduce the target. This illustrates the arithmetic, not a suggestion to play. The operator’s published contribution table and your account’s displayed progress take precedence over a generic calculator. The Commission expects significant conditions such as different game contributions to be explained clearly and linked to the details in its fair-terms glossary.
Calculator checklist: identify the promotional base, multiply it by the stated rate, check whether the relevant stakes count in full, and compare your own record with the operator’s balance and progress display. Do not treat a calculator result as evidence that winnings are guaranteed or a withdrawal will be approved.
What are wager-free spins and what does 0x mean?
Wager-free spins are promotional spins whose winnings have no additional wagering requirement if the offer really states 0x on those winnings. “No wagering” answers what happens after any win. “No deposit” answers whether you need to deposit before receiving the spins. An offer can be deposit-funded and still have 0x spin winnings; conversely, an offer can be no-deposit but attach other restrictions. Always identify which balance or winnings the 0x label covers.
Spin count is not cash value. Fifty spins at a hypothetical 10p denomination represent £5 of promotional stakes on an eligible game, not £5 of cash or promised winnings. If those spins happened to produce £8 and the terms specified 0x on the winnings, the further promotional turnover on that £8 would be £0. The game could instead produce nothing. A separate qualifying deposit or stake, expiry, winnings cap, game restriction or verification check may still matter.
“Keep what you win” should only be read as “the specified winnings are not subject to further wagering” when the complete terms support it. It does not necessarily remove a cap, make every game eligible or mean an instant withdrawal. If you want to compare the qualifying routes rather than the rollover itself, see our deposit versus no-deposit guide.
The bonus and free-spin terms to check before opting in
- Who qualifies? New or existing customers, location, age, opt-in, excluded accounts and whether a code is required.
- What must you do first? Distinguish a deposit, a qualifying stake and any required game or payment method. A required risk of your own money must not be hidden behind “free”.
- What is awarded? Bonus cash versus a fixed number of spins; spin denomination, eligible title, allocation schedule and whether winnings become cash or restricted funds.
- What is the wagering base and multiplier? Check the exact wording, not just a badge saying “0x”, “5x” or “10x”.
- Which play counts? Eligible games, contribution percentages, any maximum qualifying stake and prohibited patterns of play. “Maximum bet” is different from “maximum winnings”.
- When does each stage end? The deadline to opt in, make the qualifying action, use the spins and finish any applicable turnover can differ.
- What can be retained or withdrawn? Check any clearly stated winnings cap and whether it applies before or after bonus conversion. Do not assume “no wagering” means “no cap”.
- What happens if you stop? Find the terms on cancellation, unused bonus funds and withdrawal of your own balance. Keep a copy of the dated offer terms if you participate.
Significant restrictions should be prominent and the full terms easy to find. The ASA’s guidance for gambling promotions specifically discusses eligibility, deposits, wagering, deadlines and excluded payment methods. If important terms are missing or contradictory, ask the operator before depositing or opt out.
What are the current wagering rules in Great Britain?
Under the Gambling Commission’s LCCP social responsibility code 5.1.1, covered licensees must make incentive terms clear, transparent, fair and readily accessible. They must not apply a bonus-funds wagering requirement above 10 times or include more than one gambling-product category—betting, casino, bingo or lottery—within one incentive. The changes came into force on 19 January 2026; an earlier December 2025 date was corrected in the Commission announcement.
This is a ceiling on the specified bonus wagering requirement, not a statement that every offer uses 10x, that a qualification stake is waived, or that a promotion complies simply because it is advertised. Older UK articles may describe 35x or 50x bonus rollover under superseded rules. Check the date and the relevant terms rather than importing those figures into a current Great Britain comparison. More background is in our UK bonus-rules guide.
Bonus play restrictions must also be specified in terms. Where an operator refuses a withdrawal or removes winnings because of an alleged breach, the Commission says it must explain the relevant breach; broad, undefined discretion is not enough. See the promotional play restrictions guidance.
Can you withdraw your own deposit or wager-free winnings?
Your own deposited balance is not the same as bonus funds. The Commission says operators must display deposit and bonus balances separately and must allow withdrawal of the deposit balance even while a bonus is pending or active, subject to general regulatory obligations and fair, disclosed processing terms. Wagering restrictions must not be imposed on play using the deposit balance; winnings made with your own funds must remain withdrawable independently of bonus rollover. Read the Commission’s withdrawal guidance for the detail and exceptions.
Completing 0x or any positive wagering requirement does not set a payment deadline. Online operators must verify age and identity before gambling, and further checks can sometimes be legally necessary. The Commission says they should not wait until a withdrawal request to ask for information they could reasonably have requested earlier. See its age, ID and financial verification guidance. Payment method availability and processing time are separate questions from bonus wagering.
Wagering requirements: common questions
Does 10x mean I must deposit ten times?
No. If the stated base is £8 of bonus funds, 10x describes £80 of qualifying turnover, not an £80 deposit. Confirm the base and the terms before calculating.
Is 0x the same as no deposit?
No. A qualifying deposit or stake may still be required. 0x only removes additional turnover on the funds specified by the promotion.
Can wager-free spins lose?
Yes. Spins are chances to play an eligible game, not guaranteed cash. They can yield no winnings, and a qualifying stake can lose your own money.
Does completing the target guarantee I can withdraw the original bonus amount?
No. The target measures turnover, not profit. The balance may be depleted before completion, and other clearly stated conditions or legitimate regulatory checks may apply.
Can I use any slot or make any size of bet?
Only if the offer terms allow it. Check eligible games, each contribution percentage, maximum qualifying stake and prohibited play before using promotional funds.
What happens when the promotion expires?
That depends on its terms and the account state. Separate the deadline to claim, use spins and finish turnover. Do not assume an expired bonus can be rescued by another deposit.
Can a casino lock my deposit until I complete bonus wagering?
Not as a bonus-wagering condition. The Commission’s guidance protects withdrawal of the deposit balance, with the regulatory and fairly disclosed processing qualifications explained above.
Who should I ask if the terms are unclear?
Ask the operator for the exact base, qualifying games, contribution, deadline and treatment of your balances. Preserve the answer and the terms. You can decline the promotion. If gambling is causing harm, seek independent help rather than trying to play through a target.
